DO’s
- Know Your Hair Type
Hair type changes during pregnancy. Hormonal changes can really mess with your hair type. It is best to know the current hair type so as to help determine the best routine/treatment to follow and the products to use.
- Shampoo & Condition
Shampoo and condition more often using mild shampoo at least once a week to prevent dry and frizzy hair, also apply leave-in conditioner especially to curly hair.
- Hair Massage
Endeavour to get head massages often, it helps to relieve stress and reduce tension. It may also ease migraine or headache pain, lower blood pressure, improve circulation to your head and neck, and promote hair growth.
- Regular Hair Trim
Your hair goes through different changes during pregnancy, causing a difference in hair texture and thickness. It is a good idea to go for a regular hair trim that will help avoid split ends or rough ends.
- Balanced Diet
A balance diet helps to nourish hair during pregnancy.
DON’Ts
- Do Not Comb Wet Hair
During pregnancy, please avoid combing your hair when it is wet, allow the hair dry naturally or use a hair dryer on medium heat. Comb it using a wide-toothed comb when dry. This will help in preventing hair fall during pregnancy.
- Do Not Color
It is best to avoid coloring or bleaching your hair whilst you are pregnant. Studies show that the use of hair dyes can increase the risk of low birth weight, neuroblastoma, and leukemia in the offspring. It also weakens the hair which is already prone to fall out postpartum
- Perming
Avoid chemical treatments on your head during pregnancy; at this time, the cuticles are open and this might cause damage to both mother and child in the long run.
